About Prairieville, LA
Prairieville is an unincorporated community in Ascension Parish, located just south of Baton Rouge and just north of Gonzales, Louisiana. This quickly expanding bedroom suburb of Baton Rouge got its name from the once plentiful pastures and prairies that were visible from Highway 73 (Jefferson Hwy) and U.S. 61 (Airline Highway), an area that is now flourishing with new and existing development. Prairieville has benefited immensely from families and individuals migrating Baton Rouge, with new residents particularly drawn to this fast-growing community due to its low crime rate and high-performing public schools. Prairieville is in one of the fastest growing areas in Louisiana and, if incorporated, would likely be the largest city in Ascension Parish.
Prairieville’s Phillips Farm
The most notable local property in the Prairieville, Louisiana area was a place known as the Phillips Farm. Although the original owner of Phillips Farm died in 2005, the farmhouse that is lined with live oaks and a white planked fence still remains a local landmark to this day. The pasture of Phillips Farm was sold off in 1992 at the start of Prairieville’s suburban development boom, and a 250-resident subdivision now surrounds the farm where those landmark pastures once were. The farmhouse was sold at auction in 2006, and the 40-acre tract of land was made into a cemetery now called Oak Lane Memorial Park.
